History of Ravendale

Ravendale Community began in 1988 as a grassroot community organization. The service boundaries are harper to the north, Gratiot to the South, Conner to the east and Chalmers to the west. The Ravendale Community, Inc. consist of approximately 4200 residents in a 40-block area on Detroit's east side. Ravendale and it's executive director, Toni McIlwain, garner attention locally and nationally and are the recipients of numerous accolades and awards.

Ravendale Community, Incorporated is a non-profit, 501(c3) community organization located on the eastside of Detroit, serving the blocks bounded by Chalmers (N), Conner (S), and Harper (E), and Elmdale (W). Founded in 1988, Ravendale mission is to foster spiritual, intellectual, social and economic growth for the residents while encouraging thero to gjve of their time, talents and resources to improve the community. Ravendale is comprised of a 48 block area, 38 of these blocks was organized into block clubs headed by block club captains.

The 48213 zip code of whlch Ravendale is located in, is the home of approximately 10,000 families with over 6,000 of these households headed by single mothers. 5,700 of the single mother headed honseholds live below federally established poverty level receive some form of government assistance. Over half of the housing units in the area are renter occupied.
